How environmentally friendly is treated pine?
NTR Class A treated pine has a better environmental performance than alternative materials.
The Swedish Wood Preserving Institute has funded a LCA study (Life Cycle Analysis) that was carried out by IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute. It established that NTR Class A treated pine has a better environmental performance compared to plastic (polypropylene from recycled production waste), Siberian larch and Central European Robinia, when used for horse fencing or fence poles.
The NTR A option is the best choice in terms of environmental impact, acidification and over-fertilisation. IVL’s study confirms that it makes complete sense to use local, Swedish, NTR-classed pine for outdoor construction, regardless of whether you’re building a fence or a terrace. The study was carried out in accordance with the European standard EN 15804, and was supported by Formas and the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency.
